We Blamed the Price. It Was the Checkout.
A Shopify Plus store we work with was running a spring campaign last April. Traffic was strong. Add-to-cart rate was 11%, which is solid for their vertical (premium pet supplies). But their cart-to-purchase conversion rate was 18%. Industry average sits around 45%.
Everyone assumed the pricing was wrong. The marketing team started testing discounts. The founder wanted to restructure the entire pricing model. I asked one simple question: "Has anyone actually tried to check out on a phone this week?"
Nobody had. The checkout was broken on iOS Safari. The "Place Order" button was covered by a sticky footer bar from a Shopify app they'd installed two weeks earlier. On desktop, the footer sat below the button. On mobile, it stacked on top. Shopify cart abandonment technical issues don't always look technical. Sometimes they look like a pricing problem.
The Most Common Shopify Cart Abandonment Technical Issues
I've audited over 40 Shopify stores for technical checkout issues. Here are the problems I see most often:
App conflicts. Shopify stores run an average of 6-8 apps. Each one injects scripts, styles, and sometimes DOM elements into your storefront. Two apps that both modify the checkout or cart page can conflict in ways that aren't obvious until a customer hits a specific combination of browser, device, and cart contents.
Shipping calculator errors. If your shipping rates API throws an error (or takes too long to respond), the checkout page either shows no shipping options or displays an error message. Customers can't proceed without a shipping method selected. We've seen this happen when stores switch shipping providers and the old API credentials get revoked but the app is still installed.
Payment gateway timeouts. Stripe, PayPal, Shop Pay: they all work great 99% of the time. But that 1% can hit during your busiest hours. If the payment gateway times out, most Shopify themes show a vague error message that makes customers think their card was declined. They leave instead of retrying.
Discount code bugs. A customer adds a discount code that should give them 15% off. The code applies to the subtotal but not to a specific product variant that's excluded from the promotion. The displayed total looks wrong. Trust breaks. Cart abandoned.
How to Find These Issues Before Your Customers Do
Manual testing is necessary but not sufficient. You can't test every device, browser, and cart combination. But you can cover the high-impact scenarios:
- Test checkout on iOS Safari, Chrome Android, and desktop Chrome at minimum
- Test with your most popular products and your most common cart sizes
- Test every active discount code through the full checkout flow
- Test the checkout with a full shipping address to trigger real shipping rate calculations
Then automate the rest. We set up FunnelLeaks to monitor the cart and checkout pages for content changes, JavaScript errors, and performance issues. If a new app install breaks the checkout layout, we get an alert before the damage compounds.
We also track the cart-to-purchase conversion rate daily, not weekly. A sudden drop is our earliest signal that something technical changed. If the rate drops more than 15% from the 7-day average, we investigate immediately.
The Spring Campaign That Almost Tanked
Back to that pet supplies store. After we identified the sticky footer issue, the fix took 10 minutes. We removed the offending app and replaced it with a less intrusive alternative. The cart-to-purchase conversion rate went from 18% to 43% within three days.
If we'd gone down the path of restructuring pricing, we would've wasted weeks solving the wrong problem while the real issue continued eating revenue. That's the danger of shopify cart abandonment technical issues. They masquerade as marketing problems.
Check Your Checkout This Week
Pull out your phone right now. Go to your Shopify store. Add something to cart. Try to check out. Do it on your least favorite browser. Does everything work? Is the button visible? Does the shipping calculator load? Does the discount code apply?
If anything feels off, dig deeper. And if you want continuous monitoring that catches these issues automatically, FunnelLeaks watches your Shopify pages around the clock. We've helped stores recover thousands in lost revenue just by catching checkout bugs early. Your next campaign is too important to leave this to chance.
