Why You Need an Ad Budget Waste Calculator
I built my first ad budget waste calculator after a client asked me a question I could not answer: "How much of our spend is going to pages that do not work?"
I had no idea. I knew their cost per click. I knew their conversion rate. But I had never calculated how much money was being lost to broken pages, slow load times, and dead forms. So I built a formula. And the answer made my stomach turn.
The Formula That Exposes Hidden Waste
Here is how the ad budget waste calculator works. You need four numbers:
We saw the same pattern play out in when a Broken Page Wastes More Ad Budget Than Bad Targeting.
- Monthly ad spend. The total amount you spend on paid traffic
- Average page load time. How long your landing page takes to load on mobile
- Broken page hours per month. How many hours any funnel page is down or broken
- Mobile conversion gap. The percentage difference between your desktop and mobile conversion rates
Step 1: Calculate speed waste
For every second your page takes beyond 2 seconds, you lose roughly 7% of visitors. If your page loads in 4 seconds, that is 2 extra seconds, which means about 14% of visitors leave before seeing your page. Multiply your monthly ad spend by that percentage. That is your speed waste.
Step 2: Calculate downtime waste
Take your monthly ad spend and divide by 720 (the hours in a month). That gives you your cost per hour of ad traffic. Multiply that by the number of hours your funnel pages were broken or down. That is your downtime waste.

Step 3: Calculate mobile waste
If your mobile conversion rate is 40% lower than desktop, and 60% of your traffic is mobile, you are losing 24% of potential conversions to mobile problems. Multiply your mobile ad spend by that gap percentage. That is your mobile waste.
A Real Example From a Real Audit
I used this ad budget waste calculator on a lead generation campaign spending $30,000 a month. The numbers were painful:
- Page load time: 4.2 seconds. Speed waste: $4,200/month
- Broken form discovered after 48 hours. Downtime waste: $2,000
- Mobile conversion rate 55% lower than desktop. Mobile waste: $5,400/month
- Total hidden waste: $11,600/month, 39% of their budget
None of this showed up in their Google Ads reporting. Their ad metrics looked healthy. Their CPC was stable. Their click-through rate was strong. But almost 40% of every dollar they spent was going to visitors who could not or would not convert because of page problems. We see this pattern constantly, as we explained in 7 warning signs your funnel is leaking revenue.
Run the Calculator on Your Own Campaigns
Take five minutes right now. Pull up your ad spend numbers. Check your page load time. Think about the last time something broke on your landing page and how long it took you to notice. Plug those numbers into the formula above.
If the number makes you uncomfortable, that is the point. The first step to fixing waste is seeing it. And if you want to see what issues exist on your pages right now, run a free scan. It checks load speed, form functionality, SSL status, and tracking. All the inputs your ad budget waste calculator needs.
